Yesterday, about 200 engineers, professionals and power solutions manufacturing experts from Palladium Energy and ICCNexergy came together for an exciting announcement - our two great companies will be merging operations, creating one of the world’s largest portable power solutions providers. Our combined team (which totals more than 3,300 global employees) expressed enthusiasm about our future as one company and what this means for the future of portable power. GET OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE ... Become More Visible. (Part 2 of 3)

Hard work and passion can payoff. But, pushing yourself out of your comfort zone OFTEN and doing things that make you more versatile, more visible and create value will advance your career.

My last post was about becoming more versatile within your function and cross-functionally. Today, I’m focusing on becoming more visible. From my experience, there are two different ways to do this… in and out of the office.

In the Office: There are typical things you’d expect me to write about here like volunteering for the unwanted project or sitting on an internal committee. Yes, you should do these to become more visible. BUT—I want to give you a different perspective when volunteering for one of these … pick the right project/committee based on the following:

  • Ability to Impact Change: If the project will be a game changer for your company (will build enterprise value like establish a patent or some other piece of IP) or if the committee will impact change (a new policy, an awards program, etc.)—definitely participate. These will be high visibility in the organization to your supervisor and others higher-up in the food chain
  • Working with Different People: Work with other people outside of your core, everyday team. By doing this, you’ll raise your visibility in a broader sense, open yourself to learning from new people plus garner more understanding of what others have going on in their areas at the (going back to my versatility post)
  • Lead and then Lead Some More: By volunteering you’re stepping up and leading to a certain extent. But if there is an opportunity to own a part of the project or lead the entire initiative—seize it. Don’t sit on the sidelines. Being in a leadership position will create more attention and visibility.

Whatever you do when you participate in a project or sit on a committee… communicate, communicate, communicate. Have an opinion. Offer relevant input. Praise others when appropriate. Challenge when the time is right. Whatever you/your team achieves, make sure your supervisor is aware of it. You have to help yourself build your own profile and visibility … and eventually others will do it for you.

Out of the Office: One of the best things I did earlier on in my career was getting involved in an association based on my foundational experience—for me this was the American Marketing Association. Involved is the key word here. It’s just not about attending events. It’s about volunteering your time and talents. I first sat on a committee, the Board then eventually became President of the Atlanta chapter.

Hands down:

  • Great way to build/hone leadership abilities and other skills you may not use in the office
  • Great way to show your employer your drive, passion and motivation
  • Great networking
  • Great way to grow your functional expertise or help you become more versatile

If you are really a solid contributor, it can also be a great way to be recognized in your industry and by your peers … and this can speak volumes to your employer. If your employer is career-development focused, they will support you in this effort, allow some time to contribute to the association and even pay for your dues. This involvement not only helps build your profile and raise visibility, but helps build your employer’s brand and reinforce value proposition…and can help grow the business as well, good for future recruiting, etc. Find the association that’s right for you and your company.

GET OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE ... & Advance Your Career (Part 1 of 3)

I recently read that talent only goes so far...and that passion and hard work will help you succeed and go further in your career than you ever imagined. This really resonated with me as it has been my experience that passion and hard work really do pay off. But in addition to those things, I also know that you need to get out of your comfort zone OFTEN and do different things that make you more versatile, more visible and create value to advance your career.

Today I want to focus on becoming more versatile. There’s a couple ways to do this:

    1. Within your Function: Learn enough to be dangerous in all aspects of your core function be it finance, human resources, marketing, sales, operations, etc. For example, within my core function of marketing—there is strategy, research, communications, media planning, public relations and an entire host of channel expertise needed to round out the function. Earlier on in my career, I worked on not only understanding, but getting hands-on experience doing most everything within the marketing function (and I continue to do so as marketing evolves). You can be excellent at one thing – but being really good at many different things will make you more versatile within your core function, and a lot more valuable. Employers love this.
    2. Cross-functionally: Get ready to REALLY get out of your comfort zone. It’s intimidating to go outside of your core expertise. But, once you understand how other functions operate and how they impact the business, the more rounded and versatile you’ll be (and more value you will add to the business by having a 360 degree perspective). This doesn’t mean you get into everyone’s proverbial “sand-box” (still adhere to the black lines between functions), but you drive to understand the business fundamentals of each function, how they operate and their Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). Mentorship is key here…and this provides a perfect opportunity to find a mentor that is in a leadership position in a different function (start with the function you have the least experience with or is difficult for you to understand).
    Get out of your comfort zone & advance your career by being more versatile in your current function and across other functions. An Engineer's Perspective: What's it REALLY like to Work at Palladium

I lead talent management efforts at Palladium Energy. I talk with potential candidates (a lot of engineers—as we are always looking for talented people in this function) all day, every day. The question I get asked the most is: What is it REALLY like to work at Palladium? In order to answer this, I want to walk you through my personal job-seeking experience to share some best practices AND let you hear it from the horse’s mouth (well, an engineer’s mouth really) …

When I was looking for my next career move, I spent lots of time customizing my resume, networking and doing company research. I wanted to be ready when I landed an interview and made sure that I walked away with a clear idea of what would be waiting for me if received and accepted the job offer.

In order to be super prepared, one of the first things I asked myself was: Who do I know there? As you can imagine, having someone on “the inside” was extremely valuable in order to gain insight into the company, its culture and what it’s like day-in and day-out. This “inside” person was a current or ex-employee, a friend or relative, or anyone else who was in a position to have good information on what it was really like to be a part of the organization. Of course, I didn’t always have an “inside” person but when I did the information they provided was beyond insightful.

Consider me your “inside” person when it comes to answering: What is it REALLY like to work at Palladium? I put on my reporter hat (us HR types really do wear many different hats) to do a bit of snooping in our engineering department to get the real deal just for you. And don’t worry…you can thank me later!

Here is some verbatim feedback from Palladium’s own engineering team…

“It’s pretty cool to do “hard core” custom design work and own it from concept to production.”

“We get to work on a variety of projects across multiple markets (medical, military and consumer) and that’s huge as it broadens our skillset and expertise (we don’t work in silos!!!).”
