While developing a new, mobile point-of-sale scanner for credit-card transactions, a major manufacturer encountered problems with the device's “generic” battery design. It was neither tailored nor tested for its specific application, and resulted in insufficient capacity, ineffective protection circuitry and inadequate real-time reporting of current, voltage, and temperature.
