LATIN AMERICA: A GROWING MARKET FOR MEDICAL DEVICESWhile the U.S. medical devices market is the world's largest at $106 billion, rapid growth in Latin America indicates that market may not be far behind in coming years. Comprising Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela, the market is expected to grow by a CAGR of 4.6% between 2008 and 2013, reaching $9.2 billion. Driving the growth are several factors, including an aging population, demand for better care and global harmonization of standards. Cost containment is also a factor, contributing to increases in home healthcare and portable medical technology, with equipment such as diagnostic imaging devices leading the way. With such high demand, medical device OEMs can look forward to an abundance of opportunities. Brazil is a great case in point – the number of countries buying medical equipment manufactured in Brazil has increased from 40 to 180 in just 10 years, with revenue exceeding $2 billion in 2010. Key to the region's economic development, these trends represent an exciting time in the industry, especially for device manufacturers with local Latin American operations.

SMART GRID PROJECTS HEAT UP IN BRAZILIn other Brazil news, the development of the country's smart grid network continues. Recently, U.S. energy networking company Echelon Corp. partnered with ELO Sistemas Eletronicos, a Brazilian supplier of digital electricity meters, to produce and supply one of the country's first end-to-end smart meter systems. The announcement is the latest from a growing roster of companies eager to meet the Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency's goal of deploying 65 million smart meters by 2021. With already low energy consumption, Brazil's primary focus is not energy use; instead it centers on recouping losses from rampant energy theft. There's no doubt Brazil will succeed in increasing revenue—following new smart meter specifications expected to be released there next month, analysts say rapid growth in smart grid deployments will quickly position Brazil as a world leader in the industry, with sales expected to top $4 billion in the next decade. Learn more about Palladium's capabilities at our Brazil manufacturing facility.
