IQ Laboratories (IQL) Alert - New UL 2054 Requirements Rapidly Approaching

February 9, 2011 (Naperville, IL) – In 2010, UL made significant changes to UL’s 2054 battery pack requirements that may impact current UL 2054 approved product. The new requirements are mainly intended to:

  • Reduce the risk of fire or explosion associated with products that use batteries as a primary (non-rechargeable) or secondary (rechargeable) power source.
  • Reduce the risks of injury to persons due to fire or explosion from batteries that are removed from product, transported, stored or discarded.

The effective date for compliance to the new standards is rapidly approaching. Both old and new products that do not comply with the new requirements by November 1, 2011 will likely need to have their UL markings removed by that date.  Furthermore, noncompliant products will be deleted from UL’s database.

Although the effective date for compliance is November 2011, UL’s cutoff date to receive samples, specifications and documents is May 2011.  If you believe your company’s product no longer complies,
IQL recommends that you contact your UL representative immediately to allow sufficient lead time for UL submittal and testing. Or, for speedy approval and expert guidance through the entire process, contact us at 630-965-6474 or info@iq-laboratories.com.
