Palladium Energy Acquires MicroSun Technologies,
Forming an Industry Powerhouse

By merging these two Chicago-based companies, Palladium is now the
largest battery pack integrator in the Americas and Europe

November 19, 2012 (CHICAGO) – Palladium Energy, Inc. (Palladium), a Marlin Equity Partners’ (Marlin) portfolio company and leading manufacturer of custom lithium-based battery packs and power supplies, announced today that it has completed the acquisition of MicroSun Technologies, LLC. (MicroSun), an industry leader in customized power solutions. By joining forces with MicroSun, Palladium is now the largest independent battery pack integrator in the Americas and Europe, with a six-country global footprint, world-class design and manufacturing, as well as rapid prototype and response capabilities. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

The acquisition significantly expands Palladium’s position in key markets such as medical, military, industrial, commercial and consumer electronics. In addition, Palladium’s intellectual property and technology position is strengthened through the addition of MicroSun’s Dismounted PowerTM platform architecture, delivering innovative safety, product life extension and ruggedized power solutions for mission critical applications.

“By blending Palladium and MicroSun’s technical expertise, supply partnerships, industry leading testing and qualification, and global lean manufacturing capabilities, we are confident that Palladium will lead the industry and challenge what’s possible when it comes to best-in- class custom power solutions,” said Bob Leggett, operating partner at Marlin.

Alan ElShafei, MicroSun’s founder and chief executive officer, is now a shareholder of Palladium and will be added to the company’s board of directors.

“Since founding MicroSun in 2003, I’ve focused on strategically growing our team and product lines,’” said ElShafei. “It’s with tremendous pride that we enter this acquisition with Palladium to increase our customer value, industry position, level of technological innovation and provide new opportunities for our associates.”

In addition, MicroSun’s president and chief operating officer, John Gatti, is taking the helm as president and chief executive officer of Palladium, effective immediately.

“We are excited to have Mr. Gatti’s proven strategic leadership and more than 25 years of aerospace and defense, engineering and technology, program management and enterprise integration experience from companies like BAE Systems and Raytheon,” said Leggett. “We welcome Mr. Gatti and the MicroSun team.”

Former president and chief executive officer, Art Salyer, will take on the role of Palladium’s chief advisor to help support the business through this critical transition.

“Building Palladium’s leadership team, expanding our product mix and increasing revenue even during economic and supply chain downturns has been one of my greatest professional accomplishments,” said Salyer. “I’m confident that this great leadership team, with Mr. Gatti’s guidance, will continue to delight our customers and challenge the industry with cutting-edge technology into the future.”

“I am excited and welcome the opportunity to lead this powerful industry combination,” said Gatti. “We will work together as one team to deliver the best value and innovation for our customers to help them differentiate themselves in their markets.”

An Engineer's Perspective: What's it REALLY like to Work at Palladium

Friday, January 23, 2015

I lead talent management efforts at Palladium Energy. I talk with potential candidates (a lot of engineers—as we are always looking for talented people in this function) all day, every day. The question I get asked the most is: What is it REALLY like to work at Palladium? In order to answer this, I want to walk you through my personal job-seeking experience to share some best practices AND let you hear it from the horse’s mouth (well, an engineer’s mouth really) …

When I was looking for my next career move, I spent lots of time customizing my resume, networking and doing company research. I wanted to be ready when I landed an interview and made sure that I walked away with a clear idea of what would be waiting for me if received and accepted the job offer.

In order to be super prepared, one of the first things I asked myself was: Who do I know there? As you can imagine, having someone on “the inside” was extremely valuable in order to gain insight into the company, its culture and what it’s like day-in and day-out. This “inside” person was a current or ex-employee, a friend or relative, or anyone else who was in a position to have good information on what it was really like to be a part of the organization. Of course, I didn’t always have an “inside” person but when I did the information they provided was beyond insightful.

Consider me your “inside” person when it comes to answering: What is it REALLY like to work at Palladium? I put on my reporter hat (us HR types really do wear many different hats) to do a bit of snooping in our engineering department to get the real deal just for you. And don’t worry…you can thank me later!

Here is some verbatim feedback from Palladium’s own engineering team…

“It’s pretty cool to do “hard core” custom design work and own it from concept to production.”

“We get to work on a variety of projects across multiple markets (medical, military and consumer) and that’s huge as it broadens our skillset and expertise (we don’t work in silos!!!).”

”We are intentional about creating a vibrant culture where we REALLY do work as a team. You are never left out there to figure things out all by your lonesome.”

“We are a talented and fun group (we work in a secluded engineering and technology center that has a relaxed, but energetic and innovation-focused atmosphere) that works hard to give our customers what they want to give them the competitive edge to power their devices.”

Well, there you have it…working at Palladium in the engineering department is centered around working with a great team that’s willing to support you while you work on a variety of power solutions to deepen your skillset that really makes a difference in the world! Not many folks are able to do that.

Our Brazil Facility Invests in the Community

Wednesday, September 03, 2014

Every year, our Manaus facility is required to invest R&D funds to help push technology and innovation locally. This year, we partnered with a local organization, FPF Tech, to open a Computer Training Informatics (CTI) center in Manaus' New Israel neighborhood. Containing 15 computers and printers, CTI provides free job training for people with low income and social vulnerability.

Since the grand opening in June, over 250 students have graduated—already exceeding the 2014 goal! A huge success! We thank our Brazil team for their focus on giving back while manufacturing power solutions for the world's largest OEMs and contract manufacturers.

"By supporting the training center, we favor education and training as being pillars for people’s future success. It enhances the positive relationship we have with our neighbors and employees, as they too will be able to enjoy the courses offered.” –Bob Murayama, Director, Brazil Operations

Top 5 Reasons to Work at Palladium

Tuesday, March 25, 2014

We’re looking for highly talented, motivated and dedicated people to fill various positions in engineering, program management, IT and finance at our corporate headquarters in Woodridge, IL .

This made me start to think about why I wanted to grow my career at Palladium Energy.

Over four years ago, based on interaction I had with Palladium through a different company, I was so impressed with the people and growth in the lithium-based battery pack industry that I decided to proactively seek-out job opportunities. At the time, Palladium did not have a formal marketing department. And as the saying goes…timing is everything! They just happened to be looking for a leader to start the first-ever marketing function as they looked to diversify their business mix and grow in key markets. Knowing there would be a ton of opportunity to grow, learn and be challenged with starting and leading a core function, I went after the position they were looking to fill with full-force!

So why work at Palladium? There are five core reasons based on my personal experience and other feedback I received from other Palladium staffers:

1. The People: Work with the best and brightest…in a family-oriented environment. People that care, are passionate and want to make a difference in our industry.

2. Supportive Culture: An environment with great camaraderie, support and plenty of opportunity for fun … all based on our six Core Values—Character, Teamwork, Accountability, Innovation, Results and Customers.

3. Learn & Grow: Batteries are a HOT industry … coined by US Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz to be as “transformative to economy/modern life as the oil & gas boom”. Lots of room to learn, grow and work on power solutions for mission-critical devices that impact lives!

4. Be Challenged: Work in a challenging environment where there is never a dull moment—lots problems to solve and solutions to offer—no matter what functional area you are in (HR, finance, marketing, engineering, sales, operations, etc.).

5. Access to Senior Leaders: We’re a medium-sized, global company (locations in six different countries!) where everyone has exposure to the senior leaders. That means you’ll never be just an Employee ID number!

I feel as passionate about the people at Palladium and industry today as I did over four years ago. If you’re looking for a family-oriented, supportive work environment with a ton of opportunity to grow, learn and be challenged, contact us today. Be sure to check out the job descriptions for the positions we’re looking to fill now.
