Ah, it’s that time of year when Palladium employees gather around the conference room table in our Naperville corporate headquarters and each say one reason why we’re thankful for lithium technology. So, before we all depart for Thanksgiving dinner, we wanted to share our top 10 list with our valued blog readers.

At Palladium, we have seven worldwide locations, yet around 50 percent of our business is in Brazil. In Brazil, we manufacture lithium battery packs, WLAN cards and even notebook AC adapters. Having manufacturing capabilities in Manaus – one of Brazil's most extensively developed and liberal free trade zones (FTZ) – provides a competitive advantage for companies with local operations by helping them comply with local device content laws and regulations and avoiding high tariffs and import costs. Plus, Palladium has focused relations with government associations and agencies to help impact local content laws.

By 2050, one in every five people across the globe will be 60 years old or older. Combine this with increasing hospital costs and rising rates of diabetes and other diseases among the elderly; and not surprisingly, demand for mobile, home medical devices and monitoring systems are rising, creating high demand for reliable, high-performance battery packs.

Backpacks are stuffed with new supplies; crossing guards have assumed their posts; and the dorm room aisle at Target is depleted. That's right – school is back in session. Students across the country are heading back to the classroom, but many of these students will be ditching textbooks and picking up e-readers. According to new research from the Pew Internet & American Life Project, e-reader ownership has recently been growing faster than tablets. In fact, the number of adults in the U.S. who own an e-reader doubled from November 2010 to May 2011. Currently, 12 percent (or approximately 30 million) of Americans own an e-reader.

Our sales and marketing meetings are collaborative, educational and designed to
spur innovation. Over a packed two-day period, I was able to share the latest industry trends in lithium-based battery pack technology. We also discussed manufacturing opportunities based on our ability to manufacture a diverse mix of products including battery packs, PCM/PCBA, WLAN Cards and TV PSUs as well as emerging market activity in Brazil that will help us grow our business. I also shared reasons why the Brazil economy is growing and classified as one of the top three emerging geographies.

Temperatures across the country are on the rise, and if the heat hasn't gotten to you yet, the sticker shock from your electric bill will surely make you work up a sweat! Thankfully, many residents live in municipalities that are joining the smart grid, allowing them to find some cool savings this summer by using a smart meter in their home. In fact, thanks to government incentives, it's estimated that by 2015, 18 percent of the world's meters will be converted to smart meters for a total of 250 million smart meters worldwide. In the United States, cities from Burlington, Vt., to Augusta, Ga., are opting to convert their electric meters to these energy-saving devices.

At Palladium, we're proud to design and manufacture lithium-based battery packs for the U.S. military and defense contractors. Our design engineers have developed battery packs used in various military devices from missiles to two-way radios. In fact, our battery packs are used every day on the front lines in places like Iraq – helping soldiers communicate seamlessly, target accurately and launch weapons flawlessly.

Today is the first day of summer and coincidentally, the thermostat outside Palladium Energy's Naperville headquarters reached 90 degrees. We recently took a non-scientific survey of our employees which concluded that Palladium USA staffers are driving everywhere from Disney World to the Grand Canyon for their summer vacations. A deeper analysis of these survey results revealed that they're all using telematics devices and the services offered to get them to their destination.

Last week, I attended the Telematics Detroit 2011 Conference & Exhibition at the Showplace in Novi, Michigan. Hosted by Telematics Update, the conference touts itself as being the industry's premier telematics conference and annual meeting place for the past 10 years. Given the vast array of industry leading exhibitors present (including several current Palladium Energy customers) and knowledge communicated via the keynote speakers, I was quite excited to come back and share the details of what I learned within our organization and on this blog.

Palladium Energy's operations in Brazil are quite different when compared to those in the United States and China. Not only are there complex laws, regulations and tax codes for importing and exporting—all to benefit and spur economic development within Brazil — we also manufacture a different mix of products that include everything from lithium-based battery packs to PCBs and AC notebook adapters. This location has amazing manufacturing technical expertise and quality assurance processes that are integrated into the manufacturing lines used in the production of our products.

Two weeks ago, the world watched as massive tornadoes ripped through Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee in the United States. After the dust settled, reports claim 425 tornadoes touched down in the South, destroying neighborhoods, killing more than 300 and injuring thousands of residents. From the National Guard to U.S. power companies to local medical personnel, thousands of workers and volunteers are coming together to help communities heal and rebuild – and lithium-ion batteries are playing a big part in relief efforts.

In today's social and economic climate, it's impossible to do business without considering how your organization is impacting the environment. In 1970, when Earth Day originated in the United States, that was not the case. Earth Day went international in 1990, with organized events in 141 countries, and the United Nations designated April 22 International Mother Earth Day in 2009.

Last week, Tom Larsen, strategic marketing manager, and I were fortunate enough to make a week-long trip to our manufacturing facility in Manaus, Brazil — built in 2007. Since we documented our Shanghai facility in early March 2011, it was time to capture (via still photography) our state-of-the-art Brazil facility and the processes within for manufacturing battery packs, AC Adapters and PCB's as well as spend some quality time with the operations and sales teams.

College basketball fans all over the country have become decidedly less productive at work this month, because they have been following the NCAA® Division I Men’s Basketball Championship. Years ago, spectators had to gather at their local watering holes to keep up with the scores of all the different games. The invention of the Internet brought the ability to track scores from home or work at any time. And in today’s world of battery-powered mobile technology, of course there’s an app for that! According to a survey from IMRE Sports, nearly one in four online Americans will use social media to follow the NCAA tournament this year, and more than a quarter of those fans will use a mobile application to do so.

The past two weeks have been unbelievable. Not only have our friends and business partners in Japan suffered two natural disasters, but they now face the aftermath of nuclear threats. Everyone around the world is feeling the impact, including the global business community. As we and our customers begin to face the business implications of the natural disaster, Palladium Energy is encouraging its employees to join global relief efforts. During the month of March, Palladium will double all American Red Cross donations made by its employees.

As governments, utility companies and consumers alike strive to become more energy independent, the smart grid has risen in popularity. Using two-way digital communication, the smart grid overlays typical electrical grids with a wireless metering system that, for the first time, allows average consumers to react to changes in grid conditions and sell surplus energy back to their utility companies via a smart meter located in the home or business. Even in the smart grid, power outages are inevitable. Therefore, smart meters must contain reliable primary and back-up battery power in order to maintain the grid’s unique two-way communication. Lithium Thionyl Chloride (Li-SOCl2) is one of the perfect battery technologies for smart meters.

The 21st Century has given rise to location-based communication and information applications – making our lives safer, more integrated, energy efficient, and for those of us who are directionally challenged – it’s revolutionized the highway map. M2M OEMs such as Continental and Borg have been developing these telematics devices at a rapid pace since the early 2000’s as business and consumer demand has soared. To put this in perspective, in 2008 the total net market value for telematics and telemetry equipment was $11.6 billion and it is projected to reach $40.3 billion in 2016.

This Sunday when Pittsburgh Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin confers with his defensive coordinator, he’ll have portable electronic battery power to thank. And when a referee calls a play, you can count on battery power to hear it over the Cowboys Stadium speaker system. And when you use your credit card to buy a hot dog while in the stands, the vendor will rely on the battery power in its data capture device to process your purchase.
